ABOUT

Central Otago is New Zealand’s southernmost grape-growing region. Famous for its pristine lakes, dramatic mountains, and world class Pinot Noir. The altitude and distinct seasons create elegant, silky wines with true intensity. Coxs’ Vineyard is situated perfectly on the mid-terrace of the Gibbston sub-region. As the coolest and highest sub-region of Central Otago, Gibbston is renowned for creating the most fragrant, delicate, and enchanting Pinots. The 3-hectare vineyard sits on a north-facing slope above the Kawarau river which runs from Lake Wakatipu to the Pacific Ocean. A landscape carved by retreating glaciers, the site is surrounded by jagged peaks that are snow-covered in winter and arid in summer. The famous Remarkables mountain range that looms over Queenstown creates a rain shadow responsible for a perfect Pinot micro-climate.

In 1999 Simon Coxs’ father, Doug Cox, purchased land and planted the first vines. The business went on to operate as a contract grape growing operation that saw top NZ wine producers win the most prestigious international awards with 100% Coxs Vineyard fruit. In 2013 Simon and his wife Leah took over the business and started the first Coxs’ Vineyard wine label. Then it was their turn to win these awards. Now, Simon and Leah together with their Vineyard manager run the business that continues to punch above its weight. The Cellar door is also an art gallery specialising in significant art from New Zealand and the Pacific.
